Driving through Central america

Chantellev has indicated that this thread is about Central America

Insurance companies often will not insure if you go to another country. If you break down miles from anywhere, what will you do? Bus is probably better. Be aware that some areas of Mexico can be dangerous due to ongoing drug wars.

Hi, Honduras is also dodgy to drive through so I would consider buses instead. Tica Bus gets you from county to county.

From a person the HAS EXPERIENCE... the way to go is to buy a car (or even better a "camper")... I have traveled years, my latest trip was just 3 weeks ago, returning back from Panama. The insurance is available from different companies : ck with the trekoftheamericas on line.

Of course you do not want to "explore" take the bus.

Traveling by bus may be very limiting. If you do not mind that, then a bus may be OK for you. If you wish more freedom of movement, you should consider taking a car. Keep in mind that auto insurance from outside the country will not be recognized. You should get Mexican insurance while in Mexico. You can buy it just for the amount of time that you will be in Mexico. This may also apply for other countries in Central America. Be careful while in Mexico. There are some dangers as a result of drug wars.

Hi, do you have space for one more? 😜

Hi, we have been driving from Chicago to Panama for the last 2 months with our 10 months boy. Totally fine. Loved Mexico but too short of time so only spent time from San Miguel de Allende and further south. In several countries you need to buy car insurance at the border crossings. You need to own the car you are driving and your most valued document will be the Title and Registration of your car. We drive a Toyota 4Runner, great car and very common in Latinamerica. Make sure to read up on different Overlander blogs so you know what to expect at border crossings etc. Do it! Good luck!

We just returned ... USA TO PANAMA AND PANAMA TO USA.. all went well on both legs.. went with ExPat group with help from Adventuretours. We did the south bound leg in 14 days and the return trip in 16 (enjoyed the beach in El Salvador a few days). Remember only drive in the day...no nights.

If anyone is interested in doing this, I would like to go in the next few months. We can drive my Volkswagen Westfalia van.
