U do know that the best city to go to Cu Chi Tunnels is Ho Chi Minh, don't you?
It is easy to get all the tour you want in there. There are several tour agencies to help. They provide bus, and so on. In the case of the tunnels, take some money with you, so you can shoot. It is around 1.5 US Dollars for bullet (Minimum amount is 10). (They sell in dong in there, so better exchange your money first)
Depending of the time u arrive in there, you can easily get a hostel, so don't worry about booking in advance.
About beaches, there is Nha Trang, it is just beautiful. You can get a flight ticket for around 20US Dollars per person with Jetstar (www.jetstar.com) or VietJet (www.vietjetair.com)

Thank you for the suggestion of the beaches at Nha Trang. We had considered Phu Quoc island but not sure how we would get there from the city? Have you been?

No question but you need longer than one week for Vietnam, transport moves slowly here, and it's much larger than you think.
I am not a fan of Nha Trang. Yes the beach there is nice, but that town also has it's problems. I prefer Hoi An - a town on the Central Coast with everything (especially very good food). To get there, fly into Danang airport.
Thank you for the advice but we only have two weeks leave with work. If we think we need to visit for another trip we can go back another time.
We must make the best of the time we have there. We will have been on a long haul flight so I'm not sure we will want to spend more money on flights and more time on a plane. We will have to see when we arrive what is achievable. We will do the tunnels and if we have the time Phu Quoc island. I'm sure if nothing else the city will be a cultural experience interesting and different.
Also from the guides they say the central regions to be the wettest and perhaps flooding in September.
We are quite laid back open to suggestions but as we have no reservations we can do what we decide on arrival.

You can go on a motorbike tour through whole of vietnam. then you won't lose much time also.
You just travel from north to south or south to north in 14 days.
In March I was in VN for the 6th time. Bus from PP to HCMC, DaLat, Nha Trang, overnight bus to Hoi An(HA). Flew VietJet: DaNang to HAN. My best advice to all TP members: fly between cities, forget the overnight buses. Not worth the discomfort or your time. Fly.

After a few days in HCMC, I would fly VietJet to Danang, van shuttle over to HA, 6 times/day, $6. HA is now my fave VN city. Small enough to be walkable or rent a bicycle. Has an interesting historic section, decent beach, good food, custom made clothes. Just a perfect combo for enjoyable week.

You come to Vietnam is so nice and you can go some palaces of the North Vietnam such as Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa. The Centre is Hue and Hoi An. South is Ho Chi Minh, Cu Chi tunnel, Mekong...

Very interesting responses to this thread. I have been thinking about visiting Vietnam. I have never been there and knew very little about it. This thread gave me some insight into this place. I have been hearing a lot about touring Vietnam recently as a great place to visit.
robmer - Vietnam is a wonderful place to visit, and the experience becomes even more wonderful once you realize just how inexpensive and friendly it is. However, like anywhere else, Vietnam has it's problems (pollution, corruption, scams, petty theft). I've been there 7 times since 2008, and am seriously thinking about retirement there. I feel that I can trust the Vietnamese people more than my own here in the States, and there is no doubt that Indochina is a far safer place these days than North America. If you do decide on this country, please give it some time (3 weeks minimum), and also try to meet the real Vietnamese and not just service workers.
