I am finally booking my travels this week however am still unsure at whether I should include Australia too....
To work in Australia you'd need to get a Working Holiday Visa. Those are "once in a lifetime" (unless you do a full three months of fruit picking to qualify for a 2nd year visa)), so using it for a three month visit when you're only 24 (they're available up to your 31st birthday) seems somewhat wasteful to me. I also wouldn't expect to do better than break-even with working in Australia, since you'll (presumably) still be wanting to travel around there and see things, too.
As for South America... Argentina and Chile are the two most expensive countries in South America. There's absolutely amazing hiking in Patagonia, so I'd definitely recommend going there (assuming you like hiking, and are quite fit), but I think you could be hard-pressed making your money stretch far enough. They would be good countries for getting a first impression of South America, though. Excellent infrastructure, and enough like Western Europe not to be too great a shock, but with enough of the attitude and culture of the rest of South America that travelling further will then feel more familiar. Bolivia will probably be the most out-there from the countries you're considering.
For Argentina, bring lots and lots and lots of euros and/or dollars; there's (currently) severe limitations on how many Argentinian pesos you can withdraw at a time (with a hefty surcharge for each withdrawal), while euros/dollars are accepted at 10-20% better rates in most tourist-oriented places.
