Try alpha insurance they are quite cheap for travel insurance, as for health insurance I didn't get that but you have to apply for a Medicare card as soon as you arrive in australia which is free of charge and that's all you need to show when you go to hospital. I've been twice and shown that and not had to pay anything.

so is travel insurance really necessary?
It is for someone who suffers a medical emergency in a foreign country and they don't want to be hit with a massive bill.
