August Thailand Weather

Hi
I am travelling Thailand in August. Do I need to take warmer clothes or will shorts and t-shirts be fine?

The rain is warm. The weather will still be hot or at least warm. For most things shorts and t-shirt will do. Some temples and for some official government offices long pants and a shirt might be in your best interest. Rain may stop in an hour or two. Some days no rain, and maybe rain for a longer period of time. Some parts of Thailand may have rain and other parts no rain.

It might be a good idea to have a long sleeve shirt that you can use over your t-shirt like a jacket. Also some long pants. Sometimes on a boat ride the breeze may cool you off. Also sometimes if you visit a movie theater those theaters usually have the A/C set on cold! Same for trains and buses on long distance rides, the A/C might be set on cold! In that case you can slip your jacket/shirt on.

Even on your flight over to Thailand it might be a little chilly on the plane. (Being an old fart I wouldn't think of flying long distance with just shorts and t-shirt anyway.) I have never needed a thin jacket walking around Thailand; on buses and trains - yes!

If you are from a culture where the local weather is hotter than Thailand you might be more sensitive for temperature changes. When I am in Chiang Mai I do see some Thais with light jackets on during the cool season. But for me t-shirt and shorts was still okay. I come from a country with real cold weather including ice and snow! Many Thai males are more formal with long pants and even long sleeve shirts even just walking around.

This link shows up on many travel forums. A simple Google search will give you some other weather advice.

Hello Ab Herron, I agree with Karazyal. The weather in Thailand different part has different patterns. the time of your travel is in the rainy season in the north and in the west coast / amdaman sea ( think Phuket krabi etc). Its dry season in the east / gulf of Thailand ( koh Samui and surrounding islands). However Thailand has tropical climates you will have/ might have odd shower or two. Visitors need to dress conservatively and should avoid backpacker items such as sandals, shorts and vest tops. If you don’t have those required outfits, you can buy suitable clothes from the temple. It is more appropriate to avoid wearing revealing clothes. When entering the temple, never point your feet to people while seated during ceremonies and avoid sitting on a crossed-legged. Women must wear below knee skirts and men must wear long pants.

Taking photos inside is prohibited. Food and drinks are also not allowed. Avoid touching any of the artifacts and relics that are displayed inside the museum. Tourist should always maintain silence at all times inside the Palace Complex premises. Hope these help, good luck!
