There are many bus companies in South America. Some have Web sites, many don't. Prices are a fraction of what they are in Australia, so you don't need to worry that the trips will be expensive. Keep in mind that many locals use the bus; and incomes aren't like what they are in Australia.
When traveling for great distances, such as in Brazil, flying might be an option. Fares for internal flights are reasonable on TAM and GOL. However, you'll find that flying from country to country will be expensive as there isn't much competition on the routes.
I looked at your Travellerspoint map and some of it doesn't make sense. Why would you fly from Lima to Easter Island when it would cost you substantially less if you were to fly from Santiago, Chile? After all, Easter Island belongs to Chile; and it's considered a domestic flight from Santiago. You'll save hundreds of dollars. Plus, Valparaiso is near Santiago; and I've done it as a daytrip.
Also, if you're traveling from Australia, the usual gateway to South America is Santiago. For example, the roundtrip fare on Qantas to Santiago is several hundred dollars less than it is to Rio. How do you plan to get from Cartagena, Colombia, to Salvador, Brazil? Traveling overland would be difficult. Flying would involve at least two stops; and cost hundreds of dollars.
So go online, do more research; and adjust your itinerary. Travelling in South America isn't quite as easy as you might think. And bus fares should be among the least of your worries.

I had booked my flights return to Rio because they were actually a lot more cheaper than flying into Chile from Perth - though most people had suggested to me to fly that way it just ended up being cheaper for the dates I need to fly to RIO.
Also ignore my travel map haha - It's a very very rough idea and I change it daily! I only really use it as a visual not so much of what I will actually be doing. I wasn't planning on going to Santiago because most people had told me it's probably something I could skip.
The reason why I have gone to Easter Island ( If I even go ) from Lima is because I won't have enough time any earlier to go from Chile as I have a few tours that I need to be in certain places for!

I enjoyed my stay in Santiago. In fact, after having a lomito sandwich at La Fuente Alemana I decided to stuff my own sandwiches at home with avocado.
As mentioned in two previous Forum posts, I think it pays to "go see for yourself." Some places that people pan just might turn out to be something that you'll like. It's happened to me.
I was in Perth in May. Lovely city, with a great botanic garden that's celebrating its 50th year in September. I was told by volunteers that the garden will be spectacular, with many new plants expected to bloom.
If you're in Brazil, don't miss Iguazu Falls and Salvador. Lencois Maranhenses National Park is amazing.
While in Peru we used - not the cheapest but probably the safest. And the recliner seats are good enough to get a bit of sleep in and so an overnight bus can save you a night's accommodation. Cruz del Sur also go into Chile, Ecuador and Argentina. We used an overnight bus from Potosi to La Paz in Bolivia too but I can't remember which company.
