I am looking for awesome mountain towns out west. I recently ended an 8 year relationship with someone who lived in Boulder, CO and I came back home to Maryland. I am looking for to relocate to a place similar (doesn't have to be in CO at all). I loved how Boulder was in the mountains yet had a professional feel to it. What I didn't' like was the lack of cultural diversity; i.e. Everyone there was either super wealthy, a student, or an ex student who stayed behind and became hipster (not that I am against that, i'm just saying).
If it is any consolation I've been asked variations on this many times here in the UK -most usually "where can I live that has both the mountains and the sea". The problem is that very few places close to accessible mountains have a big enough city to provide jobs. Most towns feel too touristy. Or cost of living is too high because it's desirable with limited property.
If you are adding criteria like "must have more non hipster 20-somethings" that seems an impossible task. I think you've found a town that suits you, you're just baulking at starting afresh building a social life where your ex is. Join meetup, make some new friends at wherever you end up working, you'll be fine.
I probably would have suggested something in Colorado such as Boulder, but you are already rejecting that. Perhaps you do not wish to be too close to your ex. California has some mountain areas and also has a younger population close to your age. Northern and southern California are different types of areas, so you might want to check out both. Another possibility would be somewhere close to Seattle. Try checking some of these out on the internet. You can learn a lot from that.
Seattle would be a good option. Right on the ocean and right on mountains so skiing is 45 minutes. Boeing, Microsoft, Google and Amazon are all located there.
You might consider Taos, NM, or near Ashville, NC, or near Burlington, VT, or Hanover, NH (home of Dartmouth University), If you really want to stay out west, consider just east of Seattle, WA, Salt Lake City, UT, Idaho Falls, ID, or Great Falls, MT.
If it's California you are considering, one place that is entirely full of professionals, but with mountains not far away is Sacramento. Just east of Sacramento, California are lots of mountains yet both UC Davis and Cal State Sacramento are within 20 miles, the town has over a million residents, and is a gigantic growing area, especially on the east side of town where the mountains are (consider Roseville or Auburn or Folsom or El Dorado Hills as possible living sites). There are lots of new housing developments, with new hospitals, and new malls, and other controlled developments within this mountainous area.
