I'm starting flight school in a couple weeks and was just thinking about possible options in my future. I've always wanted to be a commercial pilot but was just wondering what life is like as a private pilot compared to a commercial pilot. I imagine it depends on if you work for a charter airline, or single company, or even a family. Just curious how an average work month compares to a commercial pilot who has some sort of schedule (not set in stone but have some idea of what they will be doing). Do private pilots work on call, or have scheduled flights etc.
The term private pilot means a hobbyist. To avoid confusion.
Not many jobs piloting for individual families! Most private jets these days are on the fractional ownership model - eg a big player is NetJets owned by Warren Buffett. Members buy a block of hours each year, in a pool of shared planes. Maybe their website has a careers section.
Generally I'd expect corporate pilot work to be limited to experienced commercial pilots, low hours guys aren't going to get in the door. Having said that these things are a bit cyclical - generations of pilots retire and there is a shortage, you get lucky.
You'd do better asking on a pilots' forum rather than a travel one.
thanks Andyf i meant that you know Any deals on private charter jets?
You've not really got the hang of this spamming lark, have you.
I know for a fact Andy has loads of great deals on private jets but he never posts them on this forum. Bugger.
Cheers,
Terry
