Hey!! My friend and I are heading to Hawaii in August. After exploring Waikiki for a few days we were thinking about hiring an old v dub van (sleeps 4) and cruising around the rest of the island. We will have room for 2 more if anybody is keen to tag along for plenty of beers and good times!! Also any tips and must do's in Oahu and Maui would be much appreciated 😀😄
You're likely to encounter "pilikia" instead of "aloha" if you decide to park your van in any neighborhood or park to sleep, drink and carry on. Then you'll likely say, "auwe!" Take this from an Islander. Hawaii has a serious problem with homelessness; and living in a beat up old VW van is sure to attract attention. Besides, it could be dangerous.

Thats for the heads up Berna256! Didnt realise this at all!! Any tecomendations for the best way to see hawaii on the cheap?
There are a number of hostels available; but if you're sharing a room, a regular hotel might be the better choice. Some hotels cater to the budget traveler. For longer stays, many people rent condos. I can't stress how big the problem of homelessness is in the Islands. Everything is expensive in Hawaii, particularly housing. That's one reason why many of the state's young people leave for the Mainland. They can't afford to buy a house or condo; and it costs a lot of money to rent. In fact, many adult children still live with their parents. Or they share housing with others.
Honolulu has an efficient bus system, so getting around is no problem. But you'll probably have to rent a car on the Neighbor Islands to get where you want to go. Traffic in Honolulu is horrendous during the rush hours, which tends to start very early. So avoid travel during those periods.
