Im 24 guy, planning to explore Sri Lanka for 2-3 weeks. Just wondering if any one is planning something similar. This is my first solo trip. Any one have any recommendations for routes and cheap accommodation.

You will love Sri Lanka - it's such a beautiful place! I travelled around the island for 4 weeks in February and it's now high on my list of favourite countries.
Make sure to take one of the old fashioned trains as they go through some truly incredible country side. The part between Ella and Nuwara Eliya is especially nice.
As for route recommendations - it really depends what you enjoy doing. Nature, Beaches, History, Culture? SL has it all! I hit up all parts of the country, including Jaffna in the North which gave a much different but more true view on the struggle this complex country has been and is going through. But that's not for everyone of course.
Accommodation in the form of hostels are few and far between but they are becoming more common. You can find some in Colombo, Negombo, Kandy and Dambulla. As for everywhere else, you can turn up and find something when you arrive; most of the time someone will come to you an offer a bed. Bartering is a big thing in most Asian countries and SL is no exception. Make sure to do it with a smile on your face as Sri Lankans are super friendly and generally just lovely people.

Hi, just to add a few before your trip. Sri Lanka can be described as the jewel of the Indian Ocean still being discovered. It has incredible temples, safari tours, national parks, tea plantations and world renowned beaches, Sri Lanka really does have everything. Here are some things to do there. Spend some time in the hustle of the capital Colombo, investigate the old fort city of Galle which has been rejuvenated following the tragedy of the tsunami, climb into the heart of the Island in Kandy and immerse into a different world in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. A country you will want to come back to over and over!

Well accommodation is one of the higher costs in Sri Lanka. All in all, for 4 weeks in SL, I spent the equivalent of US$900 of which around US$450 of that was on accommodation.
Transport is incredibly cheap - for example my bus ride from Trincomalee to Jaffna, which took around 5 hours, cost me a little over $2. Local buses around cities will usually cost no more than $0.30. Food is also inexpensive, especially if you stay away from Western food places. You can easily find places that sell large Sri Lankan curries for $3-5 and snacks (like roti & dhal) rarely go over $0.75. Look out for the sellers on long train rides; they're quite reasonably priced!
Entrance fees to popular tourists spots are way overpriced for foreigners though. For example, Sigiriya costs somewhere around $25 to get in so I went for its neighbouring rock, Pidurangala instead. This was an interesting climb and gave great views of Sigiriya and only cost $4.

I have been hearing so much about Sri Lanka, that I had to read the posts on this thread to learn more. Marco Polo has provided some great info. I am excited that it is not that expensive. US$450 for accommodations for 4 weeks does not sound that bad.
Hello Guys, MarcoPolo89 is correct. For other added information and based on other blogs and experiences, it will afford transport, clean double rooms or bungalows on the beach, food and the entrance fees to most of the country’s sites. Expect to spend a bit more if you plan on flying around the country, and a little bit less if you stay in dorms. There are also some stunning rooms in Sri Lanka and most can be paid for a budget. The food in Sri Lanka is delicious. Sri Lankans seldom eat at restaurants, so keep in mind that you’ll have to order your meal hours in advance.
For beers in restaurants will cost you around $2 and about half of that at the liquor store. Cocktails will be between $4-$6. Tipping is commonplace in Sri Lanka. A 10% service charge will automatically be added to your food and hotel bills, but this almost always goes straight into the pocket of the hotel owner. An additional 10% is expected for waiters, drivers and tour guides, while bell boys and the guy who watches your shoes at temples will expect about 50 rupees. Hope these help too!
