Travelling around Asia and Australia

Hi,
I go travelling on this year. I am doing Asia first where I am travelling to Bangkok on the 7th October and then on the 7th December I fly from Phuket to Sydney where I am planning on travelling up the east coast to Cairns.

For Thailand, since you will be there for over 30 days, you will probably need to apply for and pay for a Tourist Visa ahead of time.

There will be millions of tourists in Thailand during your time there. You will meet some people in hotels/hostels, on tours, on the plane over and even walking around. But you can have a good time by yourself too.

Take the time to read some of the many posts on "solo woman traveler" or words like that. If you do get some requests to meet up be cautious to protect yourself. Some cultures see a woman traveling alone as a woman looking for a date. Maybe best to not give a potential creep your real name and location for your hotel room without some screening.

If you need hotel help or other advice first do a forum search (big screen computer works better than a small phone,) also for hotel help include a price range in Thai baht.

For the first few days it might be better to have a hotel to direct the taxi to. Most airlines from Europe and N. America first land at Suvarnabhumi Airport. From that airport during the day up to around midnight you also have the Airport Rail Link (train service) to the city area. (Rail Link connects with the subway and the Skytrain.) There are some hotels and a few hostels you can walk to from Skytrain stops. But the train service does not reach everywhere in Bangkok. From Bangkok you have two airports for flying to other cities.

From either airport you have taxi service 24 hours a day. You will get your best rate of exchange changing your currency in Thailand. At the airport you also have bank owned currency exchange kiosks available 24 hours a day. Most Western currencies accepted and get a better rate in Thailand. If you are taking credit and debit cards remember to notify your bank that you will be overseas and where. Don't rely on a single debit or credit card because that card can be stolen, damaged or just plain lost. Check expiration dates on credit/debit cards and even your passport.

Thailand has good bus service and a long distance train service that reaches from the top of Thailand to the bottom. (Look at a map of Thailand and get your bearings.)

Do a Google search for scams to avoid.

Have fun.

thank you! Lots of useful info there much appreciated!
