Hi. I was planning on going to Australia next year but the company I was working for shut down so have decided to bite the bullet and go now!! Not got as much money as I'd been planning so am going to head for Perth as have some family there so stay with until I find a job. Anybody have any recommendations of places to visit? Nights out, activities etc and what areas are the best to look for jobs?
Hey.
Your best bet for a night out is the Northbridge area; plenty of bars, pubs and clubs to choose from so you'll find something you like. Kings Park is nice for a stroll and has an interesting Australian themed Botanical Garden. Great views of the city from there too.
A worthwhile day trip is the town of Fremantle, only a ~30 minute train ride away. Has some nice Australian architecture and an even more chilled out vibe than Perth. Has a decent weekend market too - you can get some great deals late afternoon on Sunday. There's a pod of dolphins you can see that hunt for fish in the harbour as well.
Lots of people go to Scarborough but personally I didn't find it that great; much like the beaches in UK. You could also take a boat out to Rottnest Island and get a selfie with a friendly quokka. It's nice to cycle around though I personally think the ferry is overpriced.
In terms of finding jobs, it depends what you're looking for. There's plenty of retail and food outlets around the CBD and Northbridge areas or alternatively you could base yourself in Fremantle as that picks up during the Aussie Summer. There's usually a lot of construction work going on in Perth too as it's forever growing.
Perth and Melbourne were my favourite cities in Australia so I think you will enjoy yourself!
