Hi there
what do you want to see or do? if it is about nature go to the NPS website and pick a national park and take the ankle biters hiking
Might consider Las Vegas then something near Disneyland/Huntington Beach or else in San Diego where the kids have the beach, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, San Diego Wild Animal Park, the planetariums in Balboa Park, and Lego World a short ways north. Also a quick day trip to Mexico (Tijuana or Rosarito Beach/Ensenada might interest them. (Just don't drink the water--buy filtered water bottles while there or in the US before crossing the border. Also, if you do this, make sure you buy the optional Mexican insurance from your rental car company, as US car insurance won't cover you while in Mexico).
What are you looking for? History, nature, etc?
I might suggest:
- New Orleans & Louisiana - cajun culture, jazz music, and the nearby swamps have a lot of family friendly activities and is a bit different.
- Portland (although I haven't been) is close to the mountains and hiking, etc. but has a good music and arts scene as well
Have you considered anywhere in Canada at all?
Vancouver is lovely on it's own, and you can easily either do day trips to Vancouver island, into the rockies, or even spend some time up in Tofino in that time. You could also quite easily split your time in the city and in the mountains without having too much travel time. It's gorgeous out that way, and extremely family friendly with lots to do - from hiking to whale watching, aquariums, and surfing, never mind the food, art and culture scene in Vancouver itself.
Great if you are coming to California. There is good news, you can share apartments there that are cheap but comfortable. Please visit San Francisco as it offers beautiful attractions and amenities for both kids and adults. I am sure you will love it
