Just as a heads up, it is quite far to drive from NY to California (and back!) especially if you want to see sights along the way. If you only want to see NY and California, I suggest flying in between, or flying into one and out the other. Just trying to help ya out!

I want to see country, how people live. From the very childhood here in Russia I was told it is much better place to live than here in Russia. I want to see the truth)
Im thinking about spending about 2 days in NY and then hit the road on rented car. I hope to reach LA and got back to NY on car.
With only 20 days that is way, way too much travel. You'll never see or experience anything, all you'll be doing is driving. Re-think your plan about driving back and forth between both coasts.

Google says it is only 40 hours of driving between coasts. USA is twice smaller than Russia, and got much better roads. I suppose I could make it, but of course thank you for your advice, I`ll think about it!
inickolas, in my opinion you're not thinking this through properly.
The Google route is mostly on interstate highways. Those highways are NOT designed as a way to "see" the country, they're a means to get from Point A to Point B as fast and efficiently as possible.
You're committing to almost 4.5 hours of solid non-stop driving on a boring highway every single day. That leaves you no time to get off the beaten path and visit/explore anywhere. You're blasting right past everything that you actually want to see in order to try and get an understanding of the US.
