$80 for 80 days and getting around.

Hi, Im travelling to the US in May for just under 3 months. I have US$6500, which works out to be around $80 a day. Im just wondering if people think this is possible? I will be staying in hostels and travelling using public transport. I will be going all around US, from LA to New York and back again. Any help on cheap transport getting across the US would be helpfull as this is the part im a little uneasy about.

Well, it can be done--but the transportation will be the expensive part (as you note). I suggest a USA rail pass on Amtrak (http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak/selectpass) or a multi-ride fare of ten tickets on Trailways buses (http://www.trailwaysny.com/html/english/travel_info_discounts.asp).

This is one option. The other would be to book some fares at least 14 days ahead of time on Southwest airlines (to go across half the country, then across the other half)--and book short fares on buses or trains once you are in the three different regions (east coast, midwest, west coast). (Use the web and get their "web only fares", which are the cheapest ones.)

East simply by going to places like Subway, Quiznos, or Togos or eating lunches at chinese resturants, which always offer very reasonable (and large) lunch specials anywhere across the US. (Note: lots of people in the US buy a lunch at a chinese place, eat half and take half home for dinner, since the portions are so large).

I hope you enjoy your trip--write and let us know how it goes

Also try for free accommodation in return for a few hours work, sometimes you can find paying cash work here too.

For transportation look up the area you are in and do a search for ride share and you can get lucky here.

Just found this which might be of interest. Its a new user group, but it might have potential.
