Learning French for Cheap

Was wondering if anyone could help me vis-a-vis learning French. I studied it in the UK as part of my compulsary enducation (GCSE) but don't consider myself to speak it at all - a testimony for British education! My aim is to pick it up as quickly as possible and as cheaply as possible as I would like to teach English for a year in a French speaking country, but I want to get a head start so that I can really utilise my year there.

My recommendation to you would be that you scrape some money together and just go to France.

Ideally you should find some french people to live with, say a shared flat with some students. During the summer hols some might be gone for a month or two and happily rent out their place to you.

Maybe your french is up to the task of looking for a shared flat online?

Another strategy that could work is becoming a member on couchsurfing. You could message some French students for help finding a flat to live in for a month or two and finding a local language school that you can afford.

Do not go to Paris, pick some other French city. Paris is expensive and overrun. Bordeaux, Lyon, Toulouse and Marseilles should have decent language schools too.

If you don't mind working for keeps look into HelpXchange and WWOOF. You are bound to pick up some French that way without paying a penny.

BTW, since you want to teach English in a French-speaking country anyway - how about starting to do that in France? Give lessons in English at a local language school in exchange for getting lessons in French. Do you have your TEFL certificate yet?
