we are wanting to go from Albi (near toulouse) to Bern in switzerland by the cheapest option possible. Trains are looking pretty pricey. We dont mind how long it takes.
Hi morelands!
The bus system in France is basically non-existant, unfortunately. The train system is very good though. The cheapest way I found for you to travel to Bern is a little 'round-about.'
If you can get yourself to Rodez, you can book a cheap Ryanair flight to Milan (actually 2 flights, Rodez-London (Stansted), then London (Stansted)-Milan (Bergamo)) From there you can take a TGV-Europe train to Bern.
If you time it right you can get awesome deals by checking different days of the week for flights if your schedule is flexible. The cheapest I could find following that route is about 65euros (crazy for the km travelled!).
Hope this helps!

Milan to Bern by train will be expensive I think. You'd need to get your hands on a special offer to make it reasonably cheap.
I would play around with the french train website, if you buy in advance you can sometimes get big discounts.
Another possible route might be flying from Montpellier to Frankfurt-Hahn (again with Ryanair). If you book train tickets in advance you can sometimes find special offers from Deutsche Bahn to Switzerland starting from 39 EUR.
I would suggest Toulouse to Geneva with EasyJet, then either an internal train or bus from Geneva to Bern.
You should be able to do it for around €45 one way, for flight and Swiss public transport.
An other good option is hiking (witch takes long) or hitchhiking, just try to find some cars wich are going that way.
hitchhikers.org/index.cgi?lang=en is a good site to find you ride and get some free information, but there are lots of other sites.
Good luck to find a sheap way of transportation.

Richee
www.mitfahrzentrale.de is a ride-share service, you arrange rides through the site. People share cost of gas. There are some options for Europe-wide travel. You definitely will find somebody going Germany-Switzerland and maybe also France-Switzerland too.
