Somebody please explain about hostels, I will be a firstimer

I am going to Australia for a Month in Oct, dont know much other than here we go. I want to travel light, just a backpack with maybe some items shipped somewhere if I can find out how to do that. I have done fine for weeks in the Carribbean but who needs much clothing there? Anyway, here is my question. I want to stay in some hostels, I have never done that before. I am a widow and this trip will be a lot of firsts. I googled hostel.com and got the basics, but what are they really like? Is taking a shower in the morn a mad rush or even possible? Is there one big living room or kitchen? Can we prepare the basics? And what about etiquette? I am travelling alone, a 56 yr old woman, fit and bold. Will I be accepted? Where are all the senior travellers?
I am also gathering info on backpack style, fit, what to pack etc. I am pretty relaxed about that, if I dont have it I can buy it.....but any info is sure appreciated. This is a huge adventure for me and I dont want to screw it up.

Sending packages to yourself in Australia is easy. Send it poste restante, here's a little info on it. I sent 7 boxes of gear from the US to New Zealand including my bike, and it was all waiting for me at the Auckland post office when I got there 3 weeks later.

On the hostels. They are all different, some will have dorm rooms only, some are co ed some are m/f. some have private rooms, some have 4 bed dorms, some have large 12 bed dorms. Generally they try for some sort of common room and kitchen, sometimes the kitchen is all but useless. Australian hostels Ive found to be the worst Ive ever seen. Dirty, cramped, over full, and many drunk people living there. But not to fear, they arnt all like that, but its a good reason to only book a day or two at the max then make you mind up when you get there. Yes sometimes its a mad rush for the bathroom. yes you can prepare the basics and more in the better equipped. Sometimes you can team up with other travelers and all make a meal together.

YHA has been around the longest and has more of a zero tolerance for alcohol, therefore doesn't attract the boozing filthy backpackers as much. They are usually well run and clean and have more standards for beds per sq ft etc. The link for them seems to be under maintenance but check back later.

My suggestion would be go search online for the hostels in your area and go check them out.

[ Fixed YHA link ]

If you are going the YHA/HI route check out www.hiusa.org and read the info there. On the site you can also find the locations of YHA/HI hostels in the USA.
