please can someone clarify a point for me.
we are from australia and travelling in europe for 6 months - may to oct 2010 inclusive
on first reading about the schengen visa i concluded that we could spend 90 days of our 6 months in schengen countries and the other 3 months in non-schengen countries. i assumed this meant we could go in and out of schengen countries and the days would simply be added up as a total altogether over the 180 days and it wouldn't matter if we went in and out of schengen areas.
This is correct.
It is exactly what the 90 days in a 180 day period rule is all about.
I apologise if this is stated somewhere but i have been unable to find it clearly written on this site or elsewhere.
I must have written exactly this as a reply to questions about Schengen visa right here on the forum more than 20 times, so I am sort of surprised that you haven't found it.
But if you are looking for actual law texts - you will not find them, at least not in English. Because the UK and Ireland are not members of the Schengen Area the relevant laws have not been officially translated into English.
thankyou for your reply, i am sorry i was unable to find the answer. i found plenty of posts but all more complicated and just couldn't seem to clarify if the 90 days had to be continuous.
anyway, now that you have clarified this it is very easy to plan the holiday to suit the visa.
thankyou
