Renting a car vs. train travel through Eastern Europe

Hey all,

I made a similar suggestion in another thread, but it was pointed out there might be problems crossing borders in a hire car. The idea is a good one though - and someone who knows the legal stuff will be along soon enough to explain any options.

Good luck.

Do not drive in Turkey. Use the bus. Bus goes everywhere you want to go. Driving in Turkey is not recommended unless you know some Turkish and are a decent mechanic. The areas you automatically land in when you drive yourself are a bit ... hm, too much off the beaten track, to put it politely. Similar should be true for the Balkan area.

Moreover you'll definitely have legal problems taking a rental car across borders. It is usually no big problem between Western European EU member countries, but outside the EU? Forget it.

It just the wrong area of Europe for long-term car rental.
