I'm living at South Island of New Zealand. I haven't done the whole south island trip at once, but I heard from my friend, their plans were 1 month at least.
my only trip from middle to the bottom of South, I sent 10 days but wasn't enough time.
another trip I just done few weeks ago to the top of South Island. 5 days but still wasn't enough time.
I think you should give yourself at least one and the half month. Feb at South Island is very nice. Summer at Nelson is great. It's one of the city you must travel at summer.

Do you mean 1.5 months in total for both N + S? Also how much budget do you think i will need? I will be travelling alone.
