as the title suggests, is £1,000 (sterling) enough to go travelling on? most likely destination: australia. i'm looking to work asap when i get there.
Problem with that idea is what if you cant get work at your destination?
As for traveling on $1000What part of Australia are you traveling to and where are you traveling from?

With 1000 pounds you can have some decent fun in Europe. It would be enough for roughly 2-3 weeks backpacking, travelling by train and plane and staying in hostels.
If you are willing to work you have a decent chance to stretch that time significantly.
There are several EU-sponsored programs that send young people abroad. Look up the program. Other options are working at a HI/YHA hostel or fruitpicking. Try the Department of Work and Pensions, they might have a brochure listing options for working abroad in Europe. I know that EuroDisney in Paris is usually looking for people.
Another program that could be interesting to you is www.campamerica.co.uk
Other world-wide options can be WWOOF and HelpXchange. It means volunteering in exchange for food and a place to sleep.
And if you are interested in travelling around Europe on the cheap look at bicycle, motorcycle or car touring: if you got the right gear already and are willing to take tent and camping gear your money will last approx. 6 weeks.
thanks for your replys -
jambo101 - from the U.K. - i have an option where i may be able to start in perth where i know someone who can most likely get me a job. so i am guessing form the feedback i have had this may be the better option. i think sydney sounds more like my kinda place but can work my way over there should things go well.
t_maia - some of the things you suggest do sound good, i will look into them. i have even considered camp america before!

i done it on £1000 a month it work out rough to 53$ per day hostel 25-30$ food and booze 20$ and few $ left over but dont leave it to the last min to get work i think the first job you should get is cleaning the hostel for a free room then you save 30$ a day

Hi Hench,
Seen a few of your posts about the forums and you really seem to know your stuff!
Picked up a lot of tips so nice one.
How long do you reckon I could last in Oz/Nz with £2000? I am definetely looking to work out there aswell as soon as my funds start to run out!
Like you I like to go out and party etc but am also willing to have a a few quiet weeks, maybe going out once or twice, to save money.
Also, have you rented a camper or anything out there before? If so what sort of costs am I looking at? There is me and 1 mate but looking to meet up with other travellers to join up with etc.
I must say, it really is a tight budget especially given the fact that the amount might not cope with any emergencies or unforseen circumstances. Do you have any insurance? Also, if you run into any difficulties is there anyone you can access for funds?
Think about the issues I have raised! Good luck to you
