July and August are the peak rainy months for most parts of India. It is quite likely that u r greeted by torrential rains as u land in Mumbai. However dont be disappointed, there are drier parts of India too.
From Mumbai, u can head north and visit the colourful state of Rajasthan exploring the cities of Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaipur. If ur of the adventurous type head further north into the mountains and explore the area of Leh and its surroundings. In fact the road to Leh is open during July-Sept, so that u can be lucky in being at the right time to explore the cold desert region of Leh !!

Himachal Pradesh And Ladahk are perfect at that time of year. I was there last year and Im going back again this year. Some parts of Himachal catch more rain than others. In Manali it would rain a day or two then be really nice and sunny. You could easily get a tan there and worst since you are at 2,200 meters. At night it could get pretty chilly. Dont worry about packing a lot of clothes though. Everything there is so cheap you can outfit yourself with a wardrobe for less than 100 pounds. McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai lama was more rainy, but still nice days mixed in. Ladakh is the wild remote reign on the other side of the Himalayas. Its amazing. You can actually do a circuit from Delhi up to Manali then over to Leh in Ladahk carry on to Kashmir stay on a house boat in Srinagar, check out the changing of guards at Amritsar and back down to Delhi.
Dont forget to check out Shimla the old Raj hill station where the British set up government during the heat of summer. And the Spiti valley is amazing too.

I would say Rajasthan is definitely a good option.. Its a state with extremely distinct culture ...and there will be plenty of sunshine there as it is the hottest region also the evenings will be pleasent...
So basically you can start in Mumbai move up to Rajasthan where you must go to Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Pushkar, Jaisalmer..
Then go to Agra for Taj Mahal which is close to Delhi.
From Delhi you can go further up to Himachal Pradesh, Jammu n Kashmir and further up is leh.. you could actually take a flight from Delhi to Leh..
I would highly recommend the Himalayas.. N if u have more time u must visit leh n ladhak.
I m not sure if you ll be able to visit so many places in 2 weeks time... I think North India (himalaya n leh ladhak) might a little far fetched...

May and June are typically the hottest months in the north. In July and August it may rain also for some days in between days of sunshine.... When it rains, it gets cooler !!
I have done Delhi and Agra at all times of the year. It surely would be manageable at that time, u can either be based in Delhi and do Agra as a day trip or spend a couple of days in Agra exploring the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Sikandra and Tomb of Itmad-ud-daulah. A number of good quality trains link Delhi and Agra and the time taken is usually 2-3 hours one way. Check the official indian railway website(www.irctc.co.in) for details regarding availability of seats, pricing and other information. Online train tickets can be booked too, u just need to take the printout and show it onboard along with ur passport

In India you can catch Sun any time of the year, except may be few cloudy days in Aug.
Indian Summer is what one tries to escape from, to the cool climes of hill stations in India or for wealthier people Europe.

Since you are landing into Mumbai, Goa is a must visit, Goa is beautiful in the rains. You could take the option of spending some time in Bangalore (IT hub of India) , Coorg a beautiful hill station then the back waters of Kerala , move to TamilNadu and checkout the hill stations of Ooty and Kodaikkanal, have glimpse of Pondicherry and then move north to all the hill staions and Rajasthan etc as suggested by others. You would have covered the entire country except the East . Six weeks is enough time to do this.
In july and august you can try for a great trip in shimala, kullu Manali. These are the famous hill stations in India.
so you can enjoy.
Leh Ladakh, Himachal and Uttaranchal are what my suggestions would be because other regions can become really hot. Most of the hill stations are located in these regions. Ladakh is a cold desert and is extremely beautiful. You can travel to Manali and then drive your way through leh, or else you can reach Srinagar and then drive to Leh. There are also regular flights form Delhi to Leh
