I'm going to be in Oz from mid-end Oct and then over in NZ in the January on a whv, after hopefully spending xmas in Oz.
I too have heard soo many bad stories about Oz and Kiwi experience. After lots of research, I think Greyhound is probably the best bet for Oz. Cheaper, more flexible, a wider mix of people which is good unless you want to constantly party and drink which seems to be the theme with Oz and Kiwi experience. From what I've heard too, Oz experience will take you to hostels where they will earn a comission, not necessarily being the cheapest or best hostel. Greyhound you can hop on and off and seems more independant of itself. As for booking before or when you get there, I'm not sure but I wouldn't think it makes much difference to be honest.
Where are you hoping to fly into? I'm going to start in Cairns and work my way down the East coast. Let me know!
