Correction to Title.. we are traveling from San Fran to the CANADIAN border NOT Mexico.
Suggest you go north first of all to the city of Fairfield and visit the Jellybelly factory (kids love it there).
Next, cut west to Hwy 101 and then go north to the "Trees of Mystery" in the Redwood National Park. There are gigantic scuptures of Paul Bunyon and his ox, Babe right outside he entrance.
Go north from here through to Grants Pass and Ashland, then go east to Crater Lake.
Next head north to Bend and stop one of their fishing holes (there are many places to try your luck west of here). North to Portland and then cross over into Washington and visit the Mount St. Helens visitor center which has movies telling all about the volcanic explosion.
Head north to Olympic National Park--the only rainforest in the 50 American states (there is a rainforest on American soil in Puerto Rico also). Then drive to Seattle.
In Seattle, go to the Seattle Space Needle and eat a meal up at the top. At the bottom visit the amusement park, then visit the Experience Music Project and the Alien Museum. Spend some time in the park nearby.
Now go to the Japanese gardens in the nearby Park on the west side of Lake Washington
After this, head north to Anacortes and get the ferry across to Victoria. This is a beautiful city that looks a lot like an upscale suburb of London (think Chelsea) and worth a walk around--especially near the port area. Then go to the Butterfly World farther north of town and then to Butchart Gardens. Stop at Babe's Honey Farm and learn about how the bees gather their many kinds of honey. Take the ferry across to Vancouver. Go to Grouse Mountain and take the gondola to the top. Visit their lumberjack shows and also the compounds that hold the wolves and grizzly bears (although maybe not if you think your 2 year old will be too scared).
Visit Stanley Park, with its kiddie driving lessons place and its children's farmlands and then take the Aquabus to Granville Island, where there is a children's market and a hotel, theatres, and restaurants.
