We've just taken the bus on 26th April from Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, via El Paso across the border at Ciudad Juarez and down to Chihuahua. Everyone said we were mad but we had absolutely no problems. The bus is sealed in El Paso and then because I am British and my partner American, we had to get out at customs and immigration in Juarez to fill out a form and have our passport stamped. It's the quickest border crossing I've ever experienced and the Mexican officials were extremely helpful.
From Chihuahua we took the train through the copper canyon - a wonderful trip that I can really recommend if you have the time.

You are able to purchase your Mexican Bus tickets in Houston or any of the US Border towns in advance, change dollars into Pesos on the US side at a good rate, most of the first class buses go into Mexico City's Terminal del Norte, from there take a shared authorized taxi, there is a booth where you purchase a ticket, based on a zoned fare, no tipping required, to your lodging place in Mexico City, basic Spanish is a big help, keep a low profile and use common sense. buen viaje.
