King's Cross is a central area of Sydney but I don't know if it is the best place for a single girl. Last time I stayed in the area quite some years ago, there were prostitutes hanging out of windows in the side street opposite.
The Blue Parrot is close to the night life which can be rather noisy, but then again a hostel designed for 18-35 year olds only is not going to be quiet. But most people who stayed there seemed to be satisfied with it.
Some other hostels, etc:

.
YHA is close to Central Station which is helpful to get around different areas of Sydney and Wake up too. Right where all the buses run through.
Kings Cross is not as bad as it used to be, its a great area to go out in and its quite lit up and patrolled on busy nights which is good. It's close to everything but it would be a very noisy area to stay in.
Hmmm
