Me and my sister (age 24 and 21) are heading to Melbourne, our flight arrives 19th. Any one got any suggestions on best way to travel east coast to end up in Cairns?
Depends a lot on how long you have in total for the trip, not to mention budget. There's long stretches of nothing along the east coast, so I've done some short hops by plane in the past. Rental car offers most flexibility, but the one way fee adds up, and with the extra fees for your age, probably will have to just be forgotten about. (If you'd go for 3+ months, though, you could look into buying a car instead.) Greyhound busses are good value (especially if you have a relatively short amount of time and a completely worked out itinerary, in which case look into the various bus passes), but take noticeably longer to get anywhere. The train is generally too limited to be of use, though can be nice for a change of pace on some stretches.
