Hi,
My schengen visa has just been denied. This was my first time visa. i had applied to the french embassy as i had an invitation from my friend's mother who is a french national. i was to stay for 2 months with them and travel france and neighboring countries during my stay.

Apply again and work out definite travel and stay plans around France, even if you are not going to stick with them. Also tell them you will have a return ticket (it is far cheaper to book a return ticket rather than two one way tickets).
Mostly, I think they will want to be reassured that you are not going to settle in France with your friend's mother, regardless of papers, etc. Go there as an ordinary tourist and maybe forget most of the papers.
Possibly you should talk about staying in hotels and hostels and travel the country, and not mention staying with "family". Also maybe mention visiting Britain too even if you have no intention of doing so. But look up some details in case they ask what you want to see there. London, etc.

This has to be the worse advise Ive ever seen someone give. Telling someone to make up a bunch of lies for immigration is ridiculous and irresponsible. You are playing with someones life. Lying in the ways you have suggested and being caught could have life long ramifications on future visas to anywhere! You have no idea what you are talking about.
To the OP.
There is approaching 16million Indians looking to travel out of India each year. Faced with that, of course there will be a huge amount that are just given a blanket denial with no explanation. Depending where you are from in India, such as Kashmire, you could be refused every time. Chances are if you go over your application again and add every bit of honest information you can, you will be successful. There are a few Indian specific websites around that have forums with information on applying for visas. You might want to check those and do some research and possibly consider going to a travel agent that deals with visa applications.
I can see a few points in your application which may have caused problems:
You apply for a Schengen visa for the first time and it's for two months - that's rather a long period for a tourist. The consulate may have thought you'd plan to work while on a tourist's visa.
You don't give any hotels but say you're going to stay with friend's mother - a male friend? The consulate may have thought you'd plan to get married while there on a tourist's visa.
You didn't give a detailed itinerary just some vague ideas, which again may have sounded like you'd not plan to come as a tourist.
Did you provide proof of health insurance?
It may also have to do with your friend's mother - issuing an invitation for two months will make her responsible for all your actions for two months, that's a long time and could be very expensive.I know of cases where people's invitations were not accepted because of lack of money on the host's side.
I'd recommend applying again, this time for a shorter period, (two/three weeks maybe) with a detailed touristy plan of what you want to see and where you plan to stay. Book your hotels, name them, sometimes the reservations get checked.
Thanks everyone for your opinions and suggestions on my issue. amsel07 i agree with the points you have made and according to me i did make a mistake of being naive and hoping that they will see no problem with my travel plans. but since it was my first visa i should have given definite itineraries and some hotel or hostel bookings would have helped even if i had all other papers in place.
I would still approach next time again with honest plans as last but this time i would make shorter and more definite plans. hope it works thanks all
