Hello All
On a cruise we stopped in Ocho Rios for a day while the ship got rid of passengers and got new passengers.
The place has a fair beach and after that I walked into the small nearby town.
A bit run down but there seemed to be two cops on every corner. I had the impression that this was so that any cruisers did not have any problems in town which might stop future liners visiting there.
A Jamaican guy I worked with said that when he goes home, as soon as he opens his mouth they know he does not live on the island so the prices go up, as in special tourist price and not what the locals will pay.
Just my impressions.

Hello All
I have an upcoming 4 day trip to Jamaica next month. I am staying in Ocho Rios.
First day I will spend in Montego and Ochi
Second in Kingston
Third in Ocho Rios
and the last i plan to take a day trip to Negril.I have the bus reservations set to head to Negril that morning but nothing to return late afternoon to evening . From what i have read there are small buses and or taxis that get around the island. Does any one have any suggestions on how i can get back to Ocho Rios from Negril on a Sunday Evening?
Thanks
Thank you guys. I figured out Negril. Turns out i am going to stay in negril overnight check out the beach and cliffs during the day then head back mid day...good enough for me....im coming back home knowing i saw most of the island
Due to your description of your trip, I am just guessing you will be arriving in MoBay at Sangster International Airport. You are also giving yourself very little time to see the places you've mentioned. (Been in country 12 times.)
I have stayed in MoBay, Runaway Bay (close to Ocho and rented a car in Ocho to visit friends in Kingston) and Negril. I recommend using the airport service desk to book a taxi to get into MoBay and one of the buses to get you to Ocho. As in many places, do not trust the freelance taxis to get you to your destinations. Ocho is ~45-60 minutes from MoBay (in one direction). Negril is ~90 minutes from MoBay in the opposite direction. It's good you booked a night in Negril or you'd see most of the country through the windows of moving vehicles. The buses are cheaper, safer and do run on a more regular schedule. Taxis are known for taking you on a sightseeing tour when you're on a specific schedule (like a departure flight) and also try to charge you more in the end for the excursion you didn't want. (We almost missed our departure flight due to the bus driver stopping at his brother-in-law's road side stand so we all could have a bathroom break, buy snacks and some last minute trinkets. Same driver barely missed a jamcrow (vultures the size of the bus) because it didn't want to move.)
Be ready for the 'exit tax' also, which has always been due in Jamaican dollars in the past. Most places will take USD but return your change in JD. Convert any money at your hotel or the local bank - not at the airport as the rates will be inflated.
People there work on island time and not necessarily real time. Give yourself some leeway.
