I'm doing WWOOF in Argentina for 4 months but its not just gardening its a retreat ranch where i will be helping in the restaurant, doing housekeeping, helping with animals, helping with guests etc. and I already know the people who own the place.
Might sound like an advertisement? But I've gone to Costa Rica and South Africa through a volunteer program and they were the greatest experiences. I'm not sure if you're against volunteering in general or paying absurd amounts for it but if it's the latter, the prices were really reasonable, around 700-900USD for 4 weeks. To me, it's the safest way to travel alone for an extended period of time, and there are people there to show you around and whatnot.
Feel free to message me if you're interested

The Dilemma of giving useful commercial information without advertising: I know of a family in Arusha Tanzania, nice home and free rooms. Suitable for young adults traveling alone. Its a christian home with kids so the obvious limitations apply.
