November and December travelling through Thailand

Hey, I'm Guna be travelling through Thailand over Xmas and new year and have been told its best to boom up hostels etc as it gets busy but my problem is I am travelling on my own and don't want to book somewhere in one place to find the people I meet just before are going somewhere else so I'm left meeting new people on Xmas or new year. Hope this makes sense and if anyone's got at advise or if you're out there at this time and wanna meet up... Perfect!! Thanks xx

Katie,
I would book your first night in BKK. Someplace easy to get to from Suvarnabhumi. Top of this page has 'accommodation'. Choose Thailand, BKK and plug in your dates. Most of the younger crowd head over to the area. Heaps of places to stay/eat, heaps of backpackers coming/going daily. Get over there in the morning and look at what is offered at what price. People are leaving everyday and rooms open up every morning. If you are the least bit outgoing, chat with others about good places to stay, eat etc. Almost everyone is helpful and you should have some new friends that first day on KSR. You may even change your travel plans so you can join others as they bump around SEA. Good luck.

As said, book the first night only so you have somewhere to go and put your luggage, get a shower after the long flight and maybe a few zzz's. Not expensive.

Though there are so many tourists there that time of year, there is still lots of accommodation available.

Pop into an internet cafe and book further accommodation when there: travellerspoint, hostelbookers, hostelworld, asiarooms, etc.

Thank you for your advise, very much appreciated. Xx

As everyone has said, I would recommend only booking your first night in Bangkok.

In fact if you arrive in Bangkok around lunchtime/early evening you shouldn't have any problems finding somewhere to stay in the Khao San Road area even without a booking. (Soi Rambuttri nearby is even better - still close to the action but cheaper and quieter).

I've arrived at 3 in the morning before though and had to try about seven hotels before I found somewhere to stay, so if you arrive late then it's an idea to book for the first night.

Also, if you're heading down south then some places do get pretty full over Christmas and New Year. Haad Rin on Koh Pha Ngan for example was booked out over New Year last year, so if you're planning on going to Koh Pha Ngan then I would recommend getting there a few days before Christmas or in the gap between Christmas and New Year, as if turn up at the last minute you may find it hard to find somewhere.

Koh Phi Phi is also very busy over Christmas and New Year but it has a fast turnaround of tourists and backpackers with people leaving every day. If you go there I would, however, recommend getting there on the early morning ferry so that you'll be arriving just as most people check out and then that way you have more chance of getting booked into one of the more budget places. Otherwise if you get there on the late ferry you'll end up paying over the odds for your first night's accommodation.
