So I land in San Fran on 10th feb 2014 for seven days before heading to LA.
If you tell us your budget, maybe we can suggest a place to stay. $100. a night is cheap for SF these days. I recommend looking at the apartments listed on Airbnb.com (both shared and non-shared apartments). Location is important for SF because it does have some seedy areas (avoid the Tenderloin). I recommend the Mission District for low cost places and great Mexican food (be sure to try the Mission Burrito). The really great thing about SF is it's very small size - this means you can walk just about everywhere. The transit is also very good, but also very crowded at times. Feb will be fairly cold and rainy - if you're lucky you might catch Chinese New Year celebrations - SF is a very Asian city.
Hi, thanks for the reply! I am hoping to find a good hostel as I am travelling alone and hoped to find a sociable place to stay. I had £30 GBP per night budgeted which is flexible. I am finding San Fran a difficult place to find such accommodation- San Diego was pretty easy!

I stayed in HI-Union Square which was reasonably priced and in a really good location.
I suggest you look for a cheap hostel in Oakland near a BART station (something like the Bay Bridge Inn, which costs $48 a night plus tax;--around $54 total), and then take the BART from Oakland over to San Francisco ($6.30 round trip) for your visit.
Nothing is super cheap in San Francisco (one of the 3 most expensive cities in the US--along with New York and Honolulu;--(Washington DC would be 4th). So keep in mind that even when you get into SF the cost of food and experiences (and even the metro) will cost a bit.
Probably the cheapest thing to do is to walk from the Embarcadero over to the bay and then north to Fisherman's Wharf, where you can get some crab and bread reasonably priced--and then over to Ghiradelli Square where they will give you free chocolate samples. Enjoy your trip.
Sorry, Oakland is just not acceptable, and besides, by the time you pay roundtrip BART fares from SF, you might as well stay in SF!
I would also avoid Union Square for anything in the budget category (I believe that HI-Union Sq is actually in the Tenderloin).
The best hostel for you is the - a very good location in a park area near San Francisco Bay.
I know SF very well since I lived there for 25 yrs, and I was quite poor when I lived there. Anything in the central area (Union Square especially) should be avoided because of very high demand/very high prices. The real San Franciscans live in the outlying communities (still in the city) of the Mission District (Latin), Castro District (Gay), Sunset District (UCSF Medical Center - mixed ethnic) and Richmond District (Asian). The rich live in places like Pacific Heights or Telegraph Hill, and young well-to-do single yuppies in the Marina District. (The poor in the Tenderloin and South-of-Market areas).
Don't delay in reserving at the hostel - it's in very high demand.
The reason you had no trouble in San Diego is because it's a totally different kind of town with fewer tourists, and more moderately priced places to stay. San Diego is all about the beach, and it's considerably more casual than SF. Yes, there is also a beach in SF, but the water is normally too cold for real swimming (it usually warms up by September). SF is America's most beautiful and interesting city - by far!

I would check your place in San Diego too. Its a much more spread out city, so make sure your hostel is actually in downtown or near the tram because walking from one attraction to another isnt as possible.
good luck with your fishermans wharf query! That'll be a great place to stay and the food there is delicious. It'll be much, much better than staying in Oakland.
Well, I agree that the SF Fisherman's Wharf area is nicer than Oakland--but the amount of beds available at the hostel Daawgon recommends are very limited--although, it might be possible to find some in February (worst weather month of the year). Also, I was recommending a place where you would have a room all to yourself (and not sharing with up to 23 other individuals in a single room). I guess it all depends upon how safe you feel sharing your room (and possessions) with a bunch of unknown other individuals.

Another reason San Diego is cheaper is because it attracts more families - esp with the San Diego Zoo and Seaworld. San Francisco is more of an adult playground, and not some place you go on a strict budget.
