Best backpack for travelling Australia..

pflorida has indicated that this thread is about Backpacking (Australia)

pflorida - have you looked at any of the other threads on this subject? We'll be giving you the same advice as was on there:

- pack size depends greatly on where you go and time of year. if you're traveling in winter, you need significantly more (bulkier) items than in the summer. As you're going to OZ, shouldn't be too much of an issue, but you will have to check the weather for the times you'll be there.

- What's comfortable for you may not be comfortable for me and vice versa. I use 2 different packs depending on the nature of my trips. An Osprey 55L Ariel (the models have changed now), and a 33:40L Lowe Alpine. I'm a light packer though - the Osprey is used only for extremely cold trips - ski trips, etc. where I need specific gear and camping in the summer - room for tent, food, etc. while my 33:40 L is used for basically everything else. While these work great for me, they do NOT work for some of my friends - too small, straps in the wrong place for them, etc.

The main thing is to find something that is comfortable for you, and allows you enough space to carry what you want to bring with you. When shopping for a pack you should get it checked for fit, and usually you can ask the staff to put something with a bit of weight in it for you to see how it feels. they sit differently when packed, so be sure to try it with some weight!

- consider what you want to bring with you, and then cut it in half. Roughly. You don't need a lot of the things you think you do!

- Wheels? I couldn't do it - too much extra weight and uncomfortable on my back, usually. And really not helpful when you're on cobblestone, going up a massive hill, or find out your dorm is up 4 flights of stairs with no lift. BUT again, everybody's needs are different, and only you can determine that.

Consider the entry points as well. I have a tendency for minimum number of entry points, and preferably no zippers, as zippers can break more easily than a drawstring. The more entry points the more risk of damage.

Hope that helps!
