General advice on planning an extended road trip to the US

Hi, as subject title, but covering all angles members can think of - how to live cheaply, good and safe, but cheap accommodation, pros and cons of buying a car - that kind of things. All advice, also including what NOT to do welcome. PP

Do:
- Keep a journal and get a postcard from each state that sums pretty much all of the touristy attractions.
- As for buying a car, I would check craigslist, that is always a good start, do your research though sometimes you find some real creepers. Let me know if you need help, I live in Washington State and, there are a few of my friends that got cars this christmas and are looking to unload there old ones.
- Also Hostels is a great start to find locations to sleep, a lot of them are located near national parks which works out to seeing natural beauty.
-snip-
- Starting from the west to the east, I would begin in July to get some pretty good weather when you get to the east coast in September/October.

Dont:
- Always know the gas mileage of your car, you dont want to be stuck in the middle of no where in the middle of the night.
- Dont under pack, always be prepared, especially if you have a car, it doesnt really matter how much you bring!

Have Fun.. that is very important!

That's very helpful, thank you. I'm not planning to go till next summer, so I shall bear all your advice in mind. Patrick
