Travel Buddy Needed to BKK 13-15 Jan 2015

It is only a couple days you really don't need a "buddy." Mature retired ladies, often widows, on pensions manage to survive visits to Bangkok all on their own. So, if you are concerned about safety it's only a couple days.

If you are old enough visit a beer bar or pub in the evening - or not. Malls are open to 10 PM. During day hours you can go on a tour or visit things on your own. Do take the time to Google up "scams in Bangkok" before you visit. Usually they involve tuk-tuks taking you to stores, buying gems and gold, palace closed, being addressed by a tout pushing a massage parlor or paying a flat rate for a taxi. (Using the meter is the rule in Bangkok, when you pay a flat rate you pay more. Avoid taxis parked in front of hotels and wave a moving taxi over. Parked taxis often look for stupid tourists who will pay a flat rate.) My preference is using the Skytrain but the train does not reach everywhere.

From Singapore try to get a hotel in a different part of Bangkok other than the Pratunam area. Pratunam area is popular with tourists from Singapore but there is not much to do after dark. My advice is to either stay in the Khao San Road area where many young tourists like to go. Or, choose a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road Nana area so you can walk to nightlife, walk to restaurants, walk to malls and street vendors, walk to the Skytrain city rail service. (There is cheap rail service from Suvarnabhumi Airport up to midnight. That Rail Link connects with the Skytrain. No Skytrain service in Khao San Road area.)

Meter taxis are usually cheaper than tuk-tuks. But only if you use the meter! (Have small bills and coins for paying taxi drivers.)

Two days, not enough time to invest in checking out a "travel buddy" anyway. Just choose a hotel where you have a safety box and use it. Lock your suitcase or bag. Usually it is guests you invite to your room who end up stealing from you. You don't want to end up with a buddy who is a crook.

Bangkok, where little old tourist ladies on pensions manage safe visits all on their own.

Have fun.

Thanks for the advice
