Security with backpacking

Im going to oz at the start of feb, I wanted to know what the security is like in hostels? Im planning on bringing a gopro and then my ipad instead of a computer in order to transfer the files off the gopro. I just wanted to know whether i can lock this stuff up? Or whether its worth just keeping it in a daysack the whole time?
Thanks in advance.

Hostel theft unfortunately does happen, and not just of the big block of cheese you just put in the fridge. Mostly it's a matter of not giving any opportunistic thieves great opportunities, though: don't leave your expensive things lying in plain sight while you're somewhere else, and you'll be fine.
Seems like nowadays nearly half the backpackers in Australia are travelling with laptop, and generally without problem. All dorm rooms have lockers (bring your own padlock), where you can store stuff during the night or when you take a shower. I personally wouldn't trust my expensive electronics to that during the day while out and about (those little padlocks aren't that secure), and so carry then with me in my daypack - but that's about the extent of my worries about this, and I consider myself somewhat extreme in this, as I know plenty of people who do trust in them without any problems.

I've used one of these for years...

I haven't stayed in Australian hostels but I am the same as Sander in terms of carrying electronics in my day pack and locking it up where possible at night. Besides if you are taking the iPad in lieu of a phone you will probably want it for directions, researching transport, etc.
