Re the last part of your thread - don't just rely on this thread. Do lots & lots of research about sleeping in cars. Google 'sleeping in cars in USA' or 'sleeping in cars in Canada'. Lots of things to consider & there is lots on line about it. Good & bad.

Your call of course but I for one would not recommend it. Apart from anything else, it does not sound like fun.

And if you do decide to do that, do not tell US immigration that is your intention. I was hitch hiking with a UK friend across Canada, a long time ago, nobody does that anymore. I had a US visa but my friend did not. When he applied for his visa he was asked how he intended travelling & like a goon he said 'Hitch-hiking'. No visa & no entry to the USA for him. Too bad since we had a ride.

Happy travels.

Steve

Thanks Steve! yeah were going to go for hostels and buses i just wanted too see which is the cheapest way to travel and i think it will this will work out pretty cheap anyway! I never thought about how bad it would be sleeping in a car doesn't sound fun haha! also hostels and buses would be a good way to meet people!

Thanks again

The problem with buses and hostels is that they severely limit your activities. You will need a car for most national parks. Look at the bus routes to outline where you can go, it will be major highway routes between major cities and any small towns on those routes.

Thanks Katzgar, what would you recommend we are thinking of driving from Washington DC to San Fan via chicago, mount rushmore and yellowstone. Do you recommend a cheap car hire or do you think 2 brits could buy a cheap car?

you need an address to buy a car. there is a place called car hire 2000 I think its called.

ahh yes i never thought about that, its the same over here! haha ill check it out thankyou just hard as we need one were we dont have to drive back and drop it off! ill get researching

spend some time with gmaps. we call the central part of the country fly over because it is uninteresting farm land. The state of Iowa is all corn fields. consider running around the west coast and then fly to the east coast and run around there.

Something to keep in mind: Many U.S. car rental companies assess a surcharge to drivers under the age of 23 or 25. The fees can be hefty. Also, the number of hostels in the U.S. isn't like that in Europe. So the choices will be more limited. Consider campgrounds. I suggest flying to a region, then traveling by bus or renting a car to visit sites in that region. Check out Southwest Airlines, which sells its tickets only on its Web site, along with the other carriers. Amtrak also might be an option.
