Hello! Starting beginning of September myself & two other friends will be road tripping across the united states. Starting in Ohio, we will be heading south into the Virginias, down to Florida, cut west through new orleans all the way through Texas and into California. From there we will head north up to portland, head west through the Dakotas and down to Chicago. Then heading home back to Ohio from there.
any places you'd recommend? We will not be lodging on account of driving in a conversion van and being skilled campers. Love too see beautiful sites, great fishing spots and anything of a good or relaxing time with as little $ needed.

Sounds like a fun trip. How much time do you have for this excursion? Since you are from Ohio, remember that most - if not all - states require fishing licenses.
What kind of activities are you interested in? Are you looking for hiking trails and other outdoor activities, seeing some main cities or national sites, or keeping it more low key and just want to hang out?

I have traveled a lot of your route in many directions.
Depending on where you are starting from in Ohio.
Hocking hills in southern Ohio beautiful spot, lots of places to camp.
Also in Virginia you will cross the appalachia trail.
We have friends that run a sweet lodge/hostel/campsite...in Bluemont called Bear's Den.
If your trip west takes you through Southern Coloroado.
You have got to see the Black Canyon of The gunnison, Mesa Verde and Arches National Park in Utah.
also Ouray and DUrango CO.
BEware the drive east from Portland. Can be very deserted. If you expect to stay by Yellowstone. PLAN AHEAD.
Nowhere within 200 miles when we went through.
