Hi there everyone i have just joined the forum!...... a friend and i are thinking of going to goa for the xmas and new year period end of this year. we are wondering whether it would be better to just book a flight and sort out accommodation when we arrive or would it be wiser to book a flight and hotel package before we go.
i expect getting just a flight and sorting accommodation on arrival would be a cheaper option but our main concern is availability. i understand this is the busiest time of year in the region and wondered how easy it would be to find accommodation on arrival and not being forced to stay in somewhere awful. we would be looking for mid range hotels.......would be grateful if anybody in the know could shed some light on this as really unsure what route to take.

I was in Goa leading up to Christmas a couple of years ago. People had talked about how everything would be booked up, but with the credit crunch and world economy demise, there weren't the tourists expected and they dropped prices to try to attract people.
The only one I would book would be in Bombay, if that is your port of entry and you plan to stay a couple of days. Other than that, just wing it. You'll get a better deal and you can actually see where you are going to stay rather than a crafty photo taken 10 years ago.
Its an awesome place btw, and easy to travel around to some of the other regions.

i must admit i have been a bit suspicious about some of the hotel photos i have looked at through the tour guides so i'll take your advice and just go with the flow.

It would be great to land in to Goa straight in... You would be able to find a place to stay even when it is supposed to be completely booked during that time if the year (Christmas and New Year)...
If you think of booking it before hand then you should only go for some well known names or 4/5 Star properties... else there are plenty of options right from Homestays to Guest Houses to various lodges etc who offer accommodation at reasonable rates (You would have to Bargain to get a Good Deal)... and the best way to explore Goa is to take a Motor Bike on rent and Roam at your own pace...
Be wary of touts who would offer you various packages at probably more price than can be bought for...

You never know what the economy will be like. Its best to book a hotel in advance. Goa usually gets crowded during those days.
It would definitely be wise to book a tour and hotel package because you are travelling during xmas and might find it pretty difficult to get a good accomodation.
are you just staying in india or are you heading anywhere else in the new year?
I would highly recommend staying in Agonda, it's so beautiful. Near Palolem but away from the bustle. I travelled south India extensively and that is the place that sticks out in my mind.
Agonda is a really beautiful beach away from the crowds. You could stay in Palolem to . Its 20 mins from Agonda.
If you like the crowds try Anjuna . That's in North Goa. Morjim is really great too.

Only just seen your post, so this may be outdated now....
I always visit over Xmas. This year booked flight only, but because of it being peak period, decided to book a guesthouse for a few nights on arrival.
Although I started looking around online in January, I found that many of the ones with good reviews were already booked up for Xmas 2012. Eventually, I managed to book one in Benaulim, south Goa for Rs500 a night.
There will be accommodation available at that time, but you might end up trekking around a bit and perhaps having to accept something that isn't what you really want.
My suggestion would be to look around online for something for a couple of nights so you have assurance of somewhere to stay on arrival.
