Hi there, i will be planning to take some domestic train through out my trip in Thailand.
I wonder if generally, train in thailand is safe?
Do i need to chain my backpack to and metal barrier to keep it safe?
Since i'm travelling alone, what other safety measures should i take.

As always, being vigilant and aware of who is around you and what is going on is your best bet.
I try to hold on to my real valuables - passport, phone, camera, wallet, etc - or hide them on me somehow, not necessarily comfortable but sensible.

Yeah, i agree with Aboo, the basic rule is: If you don't care about losing it don't protect it. All my Major stuff (passport, money, etc), i keep on my person, depending on my mode of transport my pack is either a pillow or i put my foot through the straps if on a seat.
Thailand is no safer or more dangerous than any other country in the region, so if you use normal common sense you will be fine.
I agree with the others, just use common sense. Don't attract the attention to valuables by showing wealth or easy access. Theft can happen anywhere, and often does - even on some of the classiest airlines and trains. My solution is to leave the fancy stuff at home. I find Thailand to be one of the safer destinations in Asia.
Train travel is not the cheapest form of travel in Thailand and therefore doesn't have the opportunities that other forms of travel have for being robbed. It's more likely that a bus employee loading your bags under the bus will rummage through them, than a porter on a train. if you are in a sleeper carriage, chances are the only other people that would be close to your bags will be other tourists like yourself. That's not to say that if you left your wallet out on the bed, someone might not swipe it.
Personally I think chaining and padlocking things up, just brings attention to it that there is something worth stealing.
Have bags that you can lock. I prefer to sit so that I can see my bags in the overhead luggage shelf with a quick glance. If you intend to get a sleeper car get the tickets as soon as possible. Maybe consider staying in Bangkok long enough to see a few things before you leave on your train rides. Use that time to arrange transportation.
In Bangkok there are hotels not far from the Skytrain route. The Skytrain connects with the subway and the subway goes to Hualamphong train station.
I have used trains several times, once all the way through Malaysia to Singapore. Have a light jacket or at least a long sleeve shirt you can use as a jacket. Trains can be a little chilly at times; noisy and dirty too!

You can never trust anybody with your valuables. So things like money, cards, visa, passport should always be under your watch at all times. Bags can be easily chained so that is not an issue, being careful is always a good idea.
Trains or any other mode of public transport is not always safe so you have to be attentive every time.

When to buy depends on the route and the class you buy. When I wanted first class sleeper tickets to Chiang Mai, I heard that they would sell out, so I bought online from Charlie Connection Travel in Bangkok. If you want any sleeper tickets, I would buy ahead. Thai State RR has a website, and you can also buy there.

Are you skipping a visit to Bangkok? If you are there for a few days you should be able to purchase your tickets in person on the first day. But if you plan on blowing off Bangkok buy your tickets for the sleeper car online.
