The year starts when you enter Australia, which must be within a year of when the visa is granted.
I'd also recommend Brisbane but dont skip Sydney either I've got a good guide to Sydney over at -snip-. I'm also putting together guides to Brisbane and Perth as well.
I just moved here from the US, I'm on the Gold Coast and living in a suburb called Southport, I'm 5 min from the beach and 10 min from Surfers Paradise. Getting here and through customs was easy. I'd never been here before and am staying for a year. If you plan your trip where you can spend a month or so in each town that would be cheaper than staying in Hostels. There's a website here called Gumtree.com.au where people post rooms for rent etc.
