Problem

Hi
Im travelling to New York on Thursday. The booking is on my uncles name and he is the lead passenger.
He might not be able to come so will i be able to make myself as a lead passenger and will i be able to travel alone as i am 16 years old?

That would be impossible to answer without knowing the exact ticket details, but I would think there would be more of a problem at Immigration. Are you meeting family or friends here in the USA?

I would call the airline immediately, or as soon as you know about your uncle. Hopefully, your uncle purchased trip insurance?

yes i have got relatives who live there so i will be staying at their house.
nope he doesnt but hes willing to lose his money as he might not be able to travel.

I think that if you call the airline, they will straighten things out. Chances are they will charge a change fee if the tickets are highly restricted, and as long as you have relatives here, there should be no problem passing immigration. You must have your own passport and visa.

What do you mean by the tickets are highly restricted?
ok thats fine but i heard that you have to over 17 to leave the immigration if not somebody has to come and vouch for you,is that true?

Generally, the cheaper the ticket, the more restrictions it has on it. The airline would know the answer to most of your questions, but I have heard of much younger people traveling on their own. As far as vouching for you, your relatives should be happy to do that for you.

Yes, it will most likely cost you to change that ticket, but this is all a guess on my part. Go ask the professionals.

My brother and me travelled to the US by ourselves when we were 17/15 (or maybe 18/16). As Daawgon mentions, you need to talk to the airline. They can enter into the ticket info that you are travelling as a minor and you'll be looked after a little more.

I agree with both Daawgon and Sam, check with the airline. Only they can give you the correct answers.

Being a minor, most airlines will have someone available to escort you to your flight or at least give you directions to your departure gate (as you are 16 and able to navigate an airport). Changing the name on the ticket should not be an issue but there may be an extra charge for that. (Hopefully, you have found that out by now.) Have a viable credit card or additional cash in case such a fee can only be paid at the ticket counter. The airline should be able to give you that info before you get to the airport.

Most airlines will have an employee waiting for you as you disembark the plane. They will escort you to the main terminal where a family member or responsible adult can 'collect' you. (Sounds silly but that's how it's described.) Some airlines consider 16 years to be old enough to handle themselves while others require someone in the main terminal to 'collect' you. They usually ask for name(s) in case there are more than one. (Such as "it may be Uncle Ted Smith or Aunt Jane Jones.)

I flew alone several times when I was 12 & 13. As long as someone met me at the gate (now not an option due to TSA), I had no problems. That was also 40+ years ago.
