Good Luck getting into the mines, most people need an 'in' with family or friends already working in the mines. My sister has been trying to get into the mines and my best friend, it seems to be incredibly hard, especially without experience or the right qualifications. There are plenty of people and websites around that tell you it's possible to get in 'entry level' but that hasn't been the case for us.

Be very very very very very careful with mining sites on the web, especially if they want payments, there are a lot of frauds. Most Aussies are trying to break into the mining industry and so there are a lot of sharks out there.

I only live a few hours from the Mines in QLD and I haven't had any luck at all. I would suggest a plan B especially if you're not from Australia.

I've heard rumours that if you move to a mining town it's a lot easier to get work but that's still slim pickings.

kimholl is bang on the money sadly. I wouldn't be coming here with the expectation of finding a mining job, because tens of thousands of people on the east coast are also gunning for those positions. We have a lot of tradies who want to work in the mines so competition is fierce. It may be possible if you have a degree in science or engineering though.
A couple months ago I met a guy who was first year out of uni who was working over in WA earning $210k per year. He was a petroleum engineer.

Your best bet is to just get the names of some mining towns and personally contact the business managers there, NOT through the HR department. I started sending out emails to the personal addresses of managing directors of several finance firms in Chicago and New York, and they have teed me up with interviews for later this year (my resume would have been automatically discarded had I gone through HR). Like kimholl said it is not WHAT you know, but WHO you know.

Good luck
