Looking for a travel buddy for northern Sumatra....

Hi,

Hi Luke,

Sorry to disappoint you but the orangutans in Bukit Lawang are rehabilitated ones from the Rehabilitation Centre established many yrs ago by two Swiss women.
They are not like the wild ones you would find in Ketambe in south Aceh.

Do not worry if you do not find a travelling partner.
Stay at Blue Angel guesthouse in Medan where many of the back packers heading to BL stay and you will probably meet travellers there.
Lots of great places to stay in Bukit Lawang and if you after a budget place then Rain Forest owned by the famous Nora and her family is an ideal place to stay.
They have one of the best restaurants in BL - the food is fantastic.
Nora has a number of guides who can take you and others into the jungle.
Treks are quite expensive for 2-3 days so make sure you get your money changed in Medan so you have plenty for the trekking, the accomodation, the food and alcohol for some of the best parties in BL.

Pamela

Hi Pamela,

Thanks a lot for your words of wisdom, they are of great help!!!

I have a few more questions in regards to this if you dont mind.....!?!

I have read a few horror stories of some people having unpleasant run-ins with a certain orangutang (who shall remain nameless), I am led to believe that it seems that these unfortunate incidents are usually down to the guides being inexperienced or not guides at all?? I am very keen to do an overnight trek in the jungle but at the end of the day we as humans are entering the home of the orangutangs and I am fully aware that a great deal of respect and knowledge is needed around these awesome creatures, I certainly have the respect but the majority of knowledge comes from the guide (and the respect the guide has for them too). I wondered if you knew of any guides that are worth recommending? I have a friend who went with Thomas aka Jungle T, and my friend could not speak highly enough of him. They even had a run in with said well known ape and the situation was dealt with in a proper respectful manner.....unlike some of the stories I have read of unexperienced guides having group members bitten in a similar situation.

Thanks again

Luke

Hi Luke,

Yes, I know of the orangutan you are talking about. Luckily I have not met her.

Yes, is a very very good guide in Bukit Lawang.

Map of accomodation in BL.
I guess you do not know about the elephants down the way about 2-3 hrs on back of motor bike from Bukit Lawang.
The place is Tangkahan - the hidden paradise of Sumatra.

If you would like some maps of Medan and North Sumatra send me your email to my Private Messages.
Have a wonderful time.
Pamela
