Hi guys I'm looking to go travelling for 3 weeks in july/August with a budget of around £2000. I have thought about going to Thailand but not really sure which places are best to visit. Any suggestions on where to go and what to see ? any help would be appriciated
Thailand like much of Asia is in the monsoon season that time of year and when it rains it can be very, very wet and last for days. The Caribbean has not just rain but hurricane season.
Best time for Thailand is December to April when rain is a rarity and it gets hotter month by month with December merely being hot.
Really Europe or America is the best place for that time of year though with the kids off it becomes very expensive, with crowds everywhere and accommodation and transport full up.
I would wait till September when it's cheaper and quieter. Places like Spain, Italy, etc have a lot to see and I would expect sun just about every day.
Or December when you can be on the beach instead of freezing back home. Money goes a long way in Thailand.
Actually Thailand has several monsoon seasons and when it's bad in one part of the country it's often just fine in other parts. August is a very rainy time at the very eastern edge and in the north of the country, but it's usually lovely in the eastern islands and the central region.
So if you want to bop around near Koh Tao, Koh Samui and Koh Phangon it's a very good time of year for that area.
Bangkok isn't usually too bad that time of year either, but bear in mind that they did have major flooding in Bangkok towards the end of August this year.
Thanks for the replies guys . I have had a few people say I should go to Vietnam instead as I will get a better trip as I'm only going for 3 weeks . Also costa rica has been suggested . Has anyone been to either or have any info on them ?

Yes I do have. Costa Rica is really worth of visiting and is one in lap of nature.
Costa Rica is very beautiful with many nature parks and tours available. You do need to be careful though because Costa Rica is not the pristine country that is promotes itself to be. There is a very different side of Costa Rica that the Department of Tourism, of course, does not broadcast. Most of the beaches are polluted with sewage from the hotels. There has been a big effort to clean that up, threatening to close major hotels if they did not install proper sewage disposal. So, in some cases, the sewage no longer dumps on the beach but into the rivers adjacent to the hotels. Only a couple of beaches in all of Costa Rica received Blue Flag status. Look on line for the beach ratings before selecting a hotel.
That being said, if you stay at a nice hotel, and swim in the pool you will have a wonderful time. The 'Ticos' are for the most part quite friendly, but as with most countries now, crime is on the rise. Jaco Beach is a problem for drugs and sex trade so would advise staying somewhere other than Jaco.
July/August is the rainy season, but that is really not a problem. The weather is warm and it typically only rains part of the day. However, in the part of the day that it rains, it really rains. Think 18 feet of rain in 5 months which gives you a good idea of how hard it rains each day. It is a fun experience though, as long as you are aware that it WILL rain for part of every day during that those months.
Best to get the basics of Spanish down. Most hotels have someone who speaks English, more like "Spanglish" so if you can have the basics in Spanish you will have a much better time. Be prepared for what is known as Gringo prices. When you read about how inexpensive things are in Costa Rica it is true to an extent. If you are a Gringo (white foreigner) unless the prices are clearly marked you will pay significantly more. Try to shop where prices are marked.
I hope if you decide to visit Cost Rica that you have a wonderful time! It is a very beautiful country in places and if you take the time to research where to stay and what you want to do it can be a very enjoyable vacation.
If I had 3 weeks in July/August I would go to British Columbia Canada! Stunning scenery, lots of things to do, from the lovely Buchart Gardens to Whale Watching. Weather is great that time of year, not too cold and not rainy. Victoria on Vancouver Island has wonderful hotels and has been rated the most romantic city in all of Canada. Quaint little restaurants with a wide range of menus. All in all a very good choice for that time of year.

This is a very good idea, but I don't know how far the £2000 would go in either Canada or the USA - maybe if the OP stayed in a tent? I love SE Asia, but mid-summer there is the worst time of year in my opinion. I'm going to Thailand, Laos and Vietnam also, but in November/December (even then, it's blazing hot in Bangkok and Luang Prabang).
Alaska is also a possibility, but even costlier than Canada. The area of islands and little towns would be the area I'd choose. You could fly into Juneau via Seattle or Vancouver, and fish to your heart's content! Probably the most popular way of getting to SE Alaska is the Alaska Marine Highway - also known as the Ferry.
