planning to travel out to Asia on 30.11. and our round should be something like laos, vietnam, cambodia, malaysia, indonesia and hoping to stop in india on the way back (depending if we got any money left) planning to stay out there for 3-4 months. doctor over here UK recommends malaria tables for whole the jorney but seems a bit drastic - when I spoke to some friends over home (Czech Rebublic) they said they didn't take it all the time and wouldn't either. so a bit confused too. also any experience with Lariam???
I agree with you - it is a drastic measure for a casual traveler to take malaria meds - I understand there are unpleasant side effects. In my limited experience, I've found that many physicians are overzealous about drugs (especially if they have little or no personal travel experience in the tropics). Now if you plan to go trekking in the rice paddies or jungles of Asia - that's another story, but for someone seeing the sights, I would not take that doctor's advice.
As per my experience, there's no side effect on my case but you must see a doctor before taking this med...
if you don't want to take any malaria meds, always bring mosquito repellent lotion then

Just returned back from Laos, Indo and Cambodia. We took malarone for our entire stay. In Canada, they do reccomend it, but I understand this is not the case in most other countries. We did a fair amount of jungle trekking in Laos and Cambodia. Only sideaffects we noticed were nightmares/vivid dreaming. An American doctor I spoke to in Laos recommended doxycycline as a treatment with no sideaffects as well.

Depends on how far into the countryside you want to venture really. The main cities are fine, but if you're up in the boondocks of Laos or Cambodia, I'd be taking doxycycline - costs a few quid in any pharmacy in Bangkok and I've experienced no side effects at all.
In my experience, just take some decent precautions to avoid being bitten in the first place - long sleeves and trousers around dusk for a start! Anywhere near stagnant water (So Jungles and Rice Paddies for a start) are pretty evil. Lots of spray and decent clothes there.
Remember those little things carry Denge Fever, and it's a proper bastard. No cure. You'll just be in agony for two weeks. So, avoid being bitten in the first place!
