You'll definitely meet loads of people out there, it's just a bit daunting going on your own to start with I guess (well I think so anyway)
Your talking a few years ago now (2006) but when I went to Melbourne I stayed in St. Kilda Base hostel which was great, and easy to meet ppl as has a bar. I've seen it mentioned a few times on here so by sounds of it, it's still a good place to be?!
If u do stay around there, deciding to work and your not bothered what u do.. Check out a firm called Harry the hirers as they usually organise the Grand Prix so will prob have jobs going if u get in quick.. Jobs can be really hard to get tho so u might want to take extra cash with u as can be very expensive all over Aus!

Hello there buddy, Have you consider checking out the City Centre Budget Hotel, it is located in City Centre, plus easy access to and from Melbourne Airport. And the service is great. Hope this information helps you buddy.
