Well, that depends quite a bit on the mileage you'll get on your RV. Since you didn't mention the type of RV and because they range from 7 to 14 miles per gallon (with an average probably around 10 miles per gallon unless it is a diesel engine), that means you'll need to buy 1,000 gallons of gas for your trip.
Gas right now in the US runs about $3.00 to $3.35 per gallon for regular (depends upon where you live), but the prices for gas always go way up in the summer months (think between late May until early September). They expect this next year that the prices will go up more than usual--both because the economy is improving, but also since they have been finding less new oil sources--and also because some people expect that a conflict between Israel and Iran is a possibility. For this reason, I'd plan on spending at least $4.25 per gallon for your trip, meaning that you will need to budget $4,250 (American dollars) for fuel for your trip.
wow! on a 90d trip you should be able to see the almost everything! ive been there on holiday 3 years in a row and experienced how much could been saved if you return the rentalcar where you pick it up! about 1000usd for 4weeks. would recommend to visit niagra falls north of NY if you. havent seen it before. it was breathtaking! if you travel directly south i would make a stop in Savannah,Georgia. myrtle beach on Tybee Island was fantastic! we also did Florida (Miami,Orlando,KeyWest,Tampa,Fort Lauderdale) New Orleans, Mississippi and Memphis is a Must on your way towards Texas. we didnt see Texas concidered the 4week timelimit but would love to get tips. in 2011 we did the West coast. would recommend San Diego over LA. LA has alot of Hollywood sights, but is mostly surburban. Loved longbeach though and the Hollywood chaos should be on your plan. LV was nothing less than crazy. on your way you should see grand Canyon. there is alot of guided tours down to the bottom. without doubt the coolest place in all states! forgot to mention that WashingtonDC must be visited! they have a great offer on rental bikes which is a great way to cover ground and at the same time see stuff!

Thanks for both the responses. Calcruzer that gives me a rough idea of what i need to budget for and hopefully the $AUSD stays strong until our trip. I am planning on coming over from August through until the end of October so hopefully the weather is still nice!
Thanks for the tips veimoen neither my wife or I have been over there so any tips on places to see are appreciated. Yeah we are making it the trip of our lifetime so we thought 3 months will give us plenty of time to see everything that we want too.
Still 18 months away but we are both counting down already.
Hi Again just after some more advice and my thoughts are that given that we have 3 months we could save some money by renting the RV from LA and returning it to LA. Drive up to SanFran through Kansas, Missouri thru cincinnati then new york and then south and around back to LA. Anyone think this is a good idea?
Also what are the best RV rental places that i should be looking at? i have googled a few and got varying prices for 90 days between $7,500-$12,000 for a 4 berth.
Any help is much appreciated.

With that quote, you might consider buying an RV. Plenty of them available in that price range. Since you are now considering LA, check what is available on Under 'for sale', check both 'cars + trucks' & 'rvs'. No mileage charges, no drop off fee, should get most of it back. Worth looking at IMO.
You might consider renting car, staying in motels. Much less to rent, much better gas mileage, cars usually come with unlimited mileage allowance. Figure $60-70/night for motels. Crunch some numbers and see it that idea makes sense. You have plenty of time before having to make a decision. Good luck with your planning.

We had considered doing the rent a car and motel but I think it will get too hard if we really like a place and want to stay for a couple of weeks if we cant get a room or if we have booked ahead and end up not liking the place etc.
I guess with the RV it gives us more flexibility. We will probably stay a week in NY before we start off and obviously when we get to Vegas we wont need the RV so we will get rid of it there.
Have you had the situation of anyone not being able to sell the vehicle before they leave? DO car yards take them? Also i notice that there may some difficulty in buying an RV as i am not a US citizen.

I have had several members not being able to sell before they flew home. I bought it from them and then could sell it w/o time pressure. I sent them the difference, if any. Of course these are under $3K vehicles. Not going to work with a $10K RV. Out of my budget.
You are correct, there are some problems with a foreigner buying a vehicle. Almost impossible in NY, easy in Florida & NV. Possible in Calif. Craigslist is nationwide. On the right side panel on my link, pick 'New York'.
It seems you are set on renting an RV. If you have that kind of budget, OK, problem solved. I was only giving another option if you didn't want to spend $10K plus. Good luck.
