Where to go ?

Hi All,

In your place I'd go somewhere like the Costa del Sol in Spain for some weeks and then very late in the year take the Asia and Australia holiday when the weather is poor back home and nice in those places.

Unless you like awful weather that is.

That's not what I asked though :/ I asked about where to go in Australia ???

If I wanted to stay in Europe I wouldn't be asking the questions I asked, hence why I am posting in an Australia forum...

Moving on....
Anyone else any useful information/ advice re the questions in my post?

A typical budget is about $100 per day - a bed in a hostel dorm will eat up $20-40 of that. Budget more if you intend on drinking/partying a lot. If you plan on finding an apartment/flat you'll want to make sure you have some money set aside for first/last month's rent as well.

I lived in Brisbane for a couple of years. It's a nice city, but it definitely hasn't got the nightlife that you'll find in Sydney or Melbourne.

Cairns is very seasonal. You'll find more employment options there in the summer. If you really want to settle in Queensland, consider the Gold Coast. I'm not sure what the job situation is like there in winter, but it's got a decent nightlife.

Unless you have a line on some specific work somewhere, I would suggest starting somewhere around Sydney or Melbourne. Once you get a feel for things, you can always move on to another location later.

Have some ideas in mind, but be flexible. You'll get the best info from other backpackers once you hit the ground.

Hey Pollypoc, I'm in pretty much the same situation as you but i'm travelling alone. I should arrive late June/early July and originally wanted to settle in Melbourne but as you say it's winter then and I've been told that Melbourne and Sydney are far better in their summer months for obvious reasons.

So I changed my mind to Cairns or Brisbane to start off but have also heard similar things to you so I'm really not sure at that moment. In my line of work (chef) settling in Melbourne would be far better for me in their summer and at least the East Coast should have good weather by the time we arrive. I would go now but havn't got the money yet! Anyway sorry I havn't been able to answer your questions but just thought I would show others have the same decision to make!!

James

Just thinking... maybe it would be a good idea to land in the big cities and find work in Autumn/Winter/Spring because there'll be less backpackers around in the exact same situation, people don't often hire in the beginning of Summer seeing as how that's the Christmas period, and if you do go looking for work in Summer, I would suggest smaller towns and coastal areas because that is when they'll experience a big influx of Aussie holidaymakers.

As a chef, James, I think you would be welcome in Melbourne anytime!

Hi James.

Glad I am not the only one on the same boat :/

I would like to start off in Sydney or Melbourne then make my way up to Brisbane/Cairns, But like yourself we will probably start off in Brisbane/Cairns to get some sort of fine weather then make our way up Sydney/Mebourne towards the end of the year.

I am sure with your line of work you will have a good chance of finding work where ever you end up.

Do you plan to travel for a bit before you settle and work, or are you going to find work and then travel at a later stage?

Well that's encouraging to know, thanks Kellie! Would really like to stay in Melbourne for 4-5 months working in some Aisan/Mediterranean restaurants, would be great.

Hey again Pollypoc, I'm coming from Bali and can't fly direct to Cairns from there so going to rule that one out. The idea of starting in Sydney is good but I don't really see the point in me flying there then making the journey up the East Coast just to back back down again later in the year. I would like to travel a bit first before I find work so might as well just fly straight to Brisbane and visit Cairns etc. I think you guys should do the same lol! There will still be lots of backpackers there that time of year and Sydney appeals to me more around Xmas time. I was going to book my flights today so think i've just made the decision myself! Let me know what you decide James

How long are you travlling Bali for?
Are you heading by yourself?

Yeah it would make sense for you to start off in Brisbane.
after chatting to a few people myself, I think we are gonna start off in Brisbane or Carins then make our way to Sydney or melbourne at a later stage

Will be in Bali for about 3-4 weeks, going to be with some people there but then heading onto Australia on my own.
My Bali trip is booked now but decided not to book my ongoing flights to Oz just yet until I make up my mind. A couple of people on here seem to be doing a similar route as we are both thinking so will try and get in contact with them too as it would be good to know some people before I arrive
